Service Overview

The Pakistani passport is issued by the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP). Which process you follow depends on your situation — a first passport, a renewal, a replacement for a lost one, or an urgent case where you are travelling soon.

This page helps you identify the right process, then points you to the detailed guide for it.

Which Process Do You Need?

Your situation What you need
You have never held a Pakistani passport New Pakistani Passport
Your passport is expiring or has expired Passport Renewal
Your passport is lost, stolen or damaged Lost or Stolen Passport
You are travelling within days Urgent & Fast Track Passport
You have applied and want to check progress Passport Tracking Guide

Passport Types & Validity

Pakistan issues a machine-readable e-passport. When applying you choose both a validity period and a page count, and the fee changes accordingly.

Validity 5 years or 10 years
Page options 36, 72 or 100 pages
Processing categories Normal, Urgent and Fast Track — each with a different fee and timeline
Issuing authority Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP)
Choosing pages and validityIf you travel often, the higher page count and 10-year validity save you from reapplying sooner than you need to. For occasional travel, the standard option is usually sufficient.

What You Will Need in Every Case

  • Original CNIC, valid and not expired (or B-Form for a child)
  • Your previous passport, where you have one
  • The prescribed fee, paid by official challan or through the online system
  • Biometrics and photograph captured at the passport office
Your CNIC record must matchPassport details are verified against your NADRA record. If your name, father’s name or date of birth differs between documents, the application will stall at verification. Correct the CNIC first.
Beware of “fast approval” agentsNobody can move your application ahead of the queue. Official urgent and fast-track categories exist and are paid for through the official fee structure — not through an agent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to visit a passport office in person?
Yes, for biometrics and photograph capture, even where part of the process is available online.
Should I choose 5-year or 10-year validity?
The 10-year option costs more upfront but avoids reapplying sooner. Frequent travellers usually find it better value.
Can I renew an expired passport, or must I apply new?
An expired passport is normally renewed rather than applied for fresh. A lost or damaged passport follows a different process.
How long before travel should I apply?
Apply well in advance and never book non-refundable travel until the passport is physically in your hand.
Do children need their own passport?
Yes. Every traveller, including infants, requires their own passport. A child applies using their B-Form.

In Short

Identify whether you need a new passport, a renewal, a replacement or urgent processing, then follow the specific guide above. Make sure your CNIC record is accurate before you apply, because verification against NADRA is where most applications get delayed.

What this means for you

The Pakistani passport is issued by the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP), Ministry of Interior. One practical point saves a lot of confusion: the official online portal currently handles renewals (for both inland and overseas Pakistanis), while a brand-new (first-time) passport is processed in person at a Regional Passport Office. Before you start, decide between an MRP and an e-passport, and 5-year or 10-year validity.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to get a first passport online. The online service is for renewals; a first-time passport needs an office visit.
  • Using look-alike websites. DGIP states its online applications can only be submitted on its official portal and that it has no collaboration with any other site.
  • Leaving renewal too late. You can apply for renewal within one year of expiry — do it before travel plans get tight.
  • Lost or damaged passports. These usually require an in-person visit rather than a simple online renewal.

How to make sure you are on the official channel

Apply only via DGIP — onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk for renewals or a Regional Passport Office for new passports. Pay only through the official options (for example Passport Fee Asaan or e-Sahulat) at the payment step. Ignore any third-party “passport processing” site.
