Service Overview
Why Renew on Time
A CNIC is valid for a fixed period — usually 10 years — after which it must be renewed. An expired card is not accepted for official transactions, so renewing promptly keeps your identity active and avoids disruption to banking, travel and government services.
What Happens If It Expires
- Banks may restrict transactions on accounts linked to an expired CNIC
- It cannot be used for a passport, SIM or property transaction
- Access to pensions and welfare payments can be interrupted
- Travel and visa processes may be delayed
Good to Know
- Renewal upgrades your card to a chip-based Smart NIC.
- You can renew before expiry or after it has lapsed.
- Some renewals can be started online through Pak-ID.
- The renewed card is again valid for around 10 years.
What this means for you
A CNIC is renewed when it expires (or when its details are out of date). An expired CNIC can block your SIM, bank account, pension and other services, so renew a little before the expiry date rather than after. Renewal keeps your existing 13-digit number — only the card and its validity are refreshed, and you receive it as a chip-based Smart NIC.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until the card has already expired and services stop.
- Confusing renewal (same details, new validity) with modification (changing details) — pick the right service.
- Not carrying supporting documents if a detail also needs updating.
How to verify you are on the official channel
Renew only through NADRA — the PakID app, id.nadra.gov.pk, or a NADRA Registration Centre. NADRA never phones or texts you for a password, OTP or “unblocking fee.”
