CV Format for Government Jobs in Pakistan: Complete Guide

Your CV is the first thing a recruiter sees, and in most Pakistani government departments it is the only thing they see before deciding whether to shortlist you. A CV that ignores the format the department expects gets set aside quickly, no matter how strong your qualifications are.

Government CVs in Pakistan follow different conventions from private sector CVs. This guide covers what those conventions are, what to include, what to leave out, and the mistakes that cost candidates their shortlisting.

Quick summaryA government CV in Pakistan should be one to two pages, include your CNIC and domicile, list education in a table starting from your highest qualification, and stay strictly factual. Decorative designs are not appreciated.

How a government CV differs from a private sector CV

Private companies increasingly accept modern, visually designed CVs. Government departments do not work that way. Their selection committees review large volumes of applications against a fixed checklist, so they look for a predictable structure they can scan quickly.

Element Government CV Private sector CV
CNIC number Expected Usually omitted
Domicile Expected Not required
Photograph Commonly attached Often discouraged
Date of birth Expected (age limits apply) Usually omitted
Education format Table with board, year, marks Simple list
Design Plain and formal Modern designs accepted
Length 1–2 pages 1 page preferred

The standard structure

Follow this order. Committees are used to it, and departing from it only slows the reviewer down.

  1. Personal information
Full name exactly as on your CNIC, father’s name, date of birth, CNIC number, domicile district, postal address, phone number and email address.
  2. Objective
Two or three lines. State the type of position you are seeking and what you bring to it. Keep it specific and avoid empty phrases.
  3. Academic qualifications
A table listing degree or certificate, institution or board, year of passing, and marks or division. Start with your highest qualification and work backwards to Matric.
  4. Professional experience
Organisation, designation, duration, and a short list of responsibilities. Fresh candidates can list internships or leave this section out entirely.
  5. Skills
Computer skills, languages, and any technical abilities relevant to the post.
  6. Certifications and training
Short courses, NAVTTC certificates, computer diplomas, and similar training.
  7. References
Two references with designation and contact number, or simply write that references are available on request.

Details that must match your documents

Selection committees verify CV details against attached documents. Any mismatch raises doubts about the whole application, and in many cases it is treated as grounds for rejection rather than a clerical slip.

  • Your name spelled exactly as it appears on your CNIC, including middle names
  • Date of birth matching your Matric certificate, since that is the document departments treat as authoritative
  • Domicile district matching your domicile certificate, because most posts are filled against district quotas
  • Marks and division matching your transcripts, with no rounding up
  • Years of passing matching your certificates exactly
Age limitsMost government posts carry an upper age limit, with relaxation available for certain categories. Your date of birth on the CV should match your Matric certificate, since that is the date the department will use when checking eligibility.

Mistakes that get CVs set aside

  • Heavy graphics, multiple colours, or unusual fonts on a formal government application
  • Leaving out CNIC, domicile or date of birth, which forces the reviewer to hunt through attachments
  • Listing education from Matric upwards instead of highest qualification first
  • An informal email address; create a simple one based on your name
  • Vague experience entries with no dates or designations
  • Sending a scanned photograph of poor quality where the face is unclear
  • Claiming skills or experience you cannot support with documents at interview

Formatting rules

  • Font: a plain serif or sans-serif face at 11 to 12 point. Avoid decorative fonts.
  • Margins: around one inch on all sides, so the page does not look crowded.
  • Length: one page for fresh candidates, two at most for experienced ones.
  • File format: PDF, unless the advertisement specifically asks for Word.
  • File name: your own name, for example Ahmed-Khan-CV.pdf, not document.pdf.
  • Photograph: passport size, plain background, recent, and formal.

Writing the objective

The objective is the only part of a government CV where you have room to make an impression, so it should say something concrete. Compare these two:

WeakLooking for a challenging position in a reputed organization where I can utilize my skills and grow professionally.
BetterGraduate in Commerce with two years of accounts experience and working knowledge of MS Excel, seeking an Accounts Assistant position in a government department where record keeping and financial reporting are core duties.

The second version tells the reviewer your qualification, your experience, your tools and the post you want. The first tells them nothing that distinguishes you from every other applicant.

What to do if you have no experience

Fresh graduates often weaken their CVs by inflating a thin experience section. That is unnecessary. Leave the section out and give the space to your education instead, which is what committees weigh most heavily for entry-level posts.

You can still show relevant activity by listing internships and apprenticeships, final year projects, computer or short courses, and any voluntary or community work. Present these honestly under their own headings rather than dressing them up as employment.

Before you submit

  • Read the advertisement again and confirm your CV covers every requirement it lists
  • Check your phone number and email digit by digit, since a single wrong digit means no call
  • Confirm names, dates and marks match your attached documents
  • Ask someone else to read it, because a second pair of eyes catches errors you have stopped seeing
  • Save and send as PDF so the layout survives on any device
  • Keep a copy for yourself to bring to the interview

Frequently asked questions

Should I attach a photograph?
For most government posts, yes. Use a recent passport-size photograph with a plain background unless the advertisement says otherwise.
Is CNIC necessary on the CV?
It is expected on government applications and saves the reviewer from looking it up. Include the number as printed on your card.
How long should a government CV be?
One page if you are a fresh candidate, two if you have several years of experience. Longer CVs are rarely read in full.
Can I use a colourful modern template?
Not for government applications. Use a plain, formal layout. Save modern designs for private sector roles.
Should I write my CV in Urdu or English?
English is standard for government applications in Pakistan unless the advertisement asks for Urdu.
Do I need to mention my domicile?
Yes. Most government posts are filled against district and provincial quotas, so domicile is directly relevant to your eligibility.
